Lightning

The nickname for former producer Jay Tilles, based on his slow movements. After getting a lightning bolt tattoo, the cast temporarily refused to refer to him as “Lightning” and instead called him “DJ Tweeter”, a reference to the pitch of his voice.

The name also gave way to a segment “Lightning Strikes” during which Lightning’s absurd opinions are aired and ridiculed.

    You guys left Mark the Whiffle Boy out of the “Former Staff” section. I think he should be included, for those of us who go all the way back to the very beginning of the morning show.

    Didn’t Lightning’s “DJ Tweeter” nickname come from his love of car mods and sound systems? Tweeter was the name of a chain of Auto Sound shops that went bankrupt.

    No, the unfortunate nickname did in fact come from my tattoo. Deciding to celebrate ten years of working at KROQ, I tattooed a small lightning bolt on my shin. Comedic irony demanded that K&B immediately change my name. Unfortunately for them, the station had invested too much time and money into the Lightning character. K&B dropped the Tweeter nickname shortly thereafter.
